The Tree of Life (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
Features emphasize a New 4K digital restoration supervised and approved by director Terrence Malick and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, paired with a 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This edition is best for viewers who want the film in its highest restored 4K presentation with authorial verification.
Best for: Collectors who value a director-approved restoration and immersive audio. If you want the most faithful, high-detail viewing experience, choose this.
Limitations: Availability is focused on Blu-ray with 4K restoration; potential concern for those who prefer just a standard Blu-ray or additional features not listed here.
The Tree of Life (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
Features indicate a factory-sealed DVD option as part of a three-disc set, including Blu-ray and DVD formats plus a digital copy. This is a good pick for households needing multiple formats or a digital copy for portable viewing.
Best for: Viewers building a physical collection across formats or households with both Blu-ray and DVD players. Choose this if you want flexibility in playback options.
Caution: The primary emphasis here is on the DVD component; if you want the highest fidelity, this edition might be less ideal than a pure 4K Blu-ray option.
The Tree of Life (The Criterion Collection) [DVD]
Features describe a new 4K digital restoration version for Blu-ray releases, plus an extended version with additional footage and a documentary exploring the film’s collaborators and admirers. The DVD edition here offers accessible archival material and extended content for fans tracking the film’s production dialogue.
Best for: Fans seeking extended documentary content and historic context without needing 4K disc playback. Choose this if you want supplementary features and a lower price point.
Caution: The DVD format does not deliver 4K picture quality; those seeking top-resolution playback should consider a Blu-ray option with restoration details.
The Tree of Life [The Criterion Collection] [Blu-ray] [2018]
Note states the disk has English audio. This edition provides a straightforward Blu-ray presentation suitable for English-speaking audiences who prefer standard Blu-ray without additional language options.
Best for: English-audio viewers who want a reliable Blu-ray edition without extra language features. Consider this if you prioritize language clarity and a simple package.
Caution: Limited details on extra features or restorations; verify availability of 4K restoration elsewhere if that is a priority.
Buying Guide
What to consider when choosing a Tree Of Life disc edition:
- Format and resolution: If you want 4K detail and superior color, prioritize 4K restorations on Blu-ray editions from Criterion. Non-4K formats are more affordable but offer lower fidelity.
- Restoration and author involvement: Editions supervised or approved by Malick and Lubezki typically indicate a higher fidelity restoration and cinematic presentation.
- Audio experience: A 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack provides richer surround sound; ensure your setup supports it.
- Extra features: Look for extended cuts, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes content if you value context and film history.
- Format versatility: Blu-ray/DVD combos offer flexibility if you own multiple players or want digital access.
- Language and accessibility: Check audio and subtitle options if language is a concern or if you require English-only content.
